Aston Villa 0-1 Birmingham City

A huge game, maybe the biggest game in Aston Villa Women’s history as the first ever Second City Derby, The Midlands Derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham City was to take place. The teams warmed up, the teams were announced and it was time to get the game underway.

Birmingham City were first to attack as Anita Asante clears her lines as Both teams look to create the first blow in this heavyweight contest. Hannah Hampton was lucky when a mistake by her saw Jodie Hutton break into the box and as Jodie goes down, was it a penalty. Nothing given by the referee as it isn’t given but Aston Villa’s first corner on the 4th minute. Ramona Petzelberger is working extremely hard in the middle of the pitch trying to create but some nice build up play by Villa comes to nothing. Stine Larsen plays in Shania Hayles as the two link up but Shania just can’t get it under control as the ball bounces around the Birmingham box but goes behind on the 8th minute. Elisha N’Dow looks to create from the back as she plays a beautiful ball out wide but the ball just gets beyond an out stretching Jodie Hutton.

Stine Larsen working so hard but her shot gets deflected behind for a corner as Jodie Hutton’s first corner gets headed out the near post. Jodie’s second corner floats in the box but just out of the reach of Chloe Arthur’s head as the score remains 0-0 in the 13th minute. Ramona Peztelberger is the anchor in the middle as she looks to build and create the play as Villa try to get in behind. Anita Asante plays a ball in behind for Shania Hayles but Hannah Hampton comes off her line to make sure the score stays at 0-0. Villa have been very calm when Birmingham attack trying to keep the ball and stay in control. Shania Hayles has the real first chance of the game as the ball broke to her but the ball was hit straight at Hannah Hampton who saves it easy enough. A sloppy pass by Chloe Arthur see’s Birmingham have their first effort of the game as Mollie Green hits a tame shot as she hits the ball straight at Lisa Weiss.

Stine Larsen is working so hard off the ball to win it back for Aston Villa. Jodie Hutton takes the ball past one and creates a chance as Marisa Ewers heads the ball back across the goal but it just misses Shania Hayles as it goes behind on the 28th minute. Birmingham nearly create their own downfall as Shania Hayles and Jodie Hutton try to work it between them but comes to nothing. Walker plays in Green but as it looks like becoming 0-1 it was a really poor shot sees Lisa Weiss make the save on 31st minute. Ella Franklin Vs Emma Kelly was a great battle on the pitch but mostly the battle was won by Ella as she once again wins the ball back. Jodie Hutton picked up a booking on the 38th minute after a nudge and a half on the 34th minute as she was just trying to hard. Ella Franklin-Fraiture and Ramona Petzelberger were working hard in the middle to create for Villa. The final chance of the half came up as a brilliant free kick by Jodie Hutton floated towards Stine Larsen’s head whose effort went wide of the post as the half came to a 0-0 end.

Lisa Weiss was called into action twice early in half to play sweeper keeper and a rough back pass but thankfully Mollie Green’s shot was dragged wide of the post. A quick corner by Birmingham saw Chloe McCarron hit the ball but it lofted over the bar as Villa look to be playing themselves into trouble as the half started. Ella Franklin-Fraiture was doing what she does best in the battle with Emma Kelly as you could hear Tom Stack barking orders. Jodie Hutton lofts a free kick into the box and Marisa Ewers drags her effort wide of the post on the 53rd minute. Birmingham make their first change on the 56th minute as Lucy Whipp was on for Chloe McCarron.

Chloe Arthur makes a mistake with a pass across the field as Birmingham break in behind but thankfully Villa eventually get the ball out without any damage. Chloe Arthur hits a long range shot on the half volley but it goes high an wide as the score still remains 0-0. Both teams seems to be able to build up play but not find a way in behind the defences of each other. Villa make their first change on the 61st minute as Emma Follis came on for Jodie Hutton. Some good build up play once again was running the wings and trying to get through but Birmingham were defending well as they blocked off Villa attacks.

A second and third change for Villa on the 68th minute as Nadine Hanssen and Diana Silva came on for Chloe Arthur and Shania Hayles. Nadine Hanssen nearly made an instant impact as her effort was blocked by Georgia Brougham. A great corner in from Emma Follis followed but Marisa Ewers vollet went wide of the target as we reached the final 20 minutes still at 0-0. The 72nd minute Lucy Whipp smashed a cross across the box and as Elisha N’Dow header fell to Claudia Walker she smashed it with a rifle of a shot as it cannoned in off the bar giving Birmingham City a 0-1 lead.

Villa were trying hard to get back on level terms with Diana Silva and Nadine Hanssen were working hard. Emma Follis had an effort and so did Marisa Ewers but the score remained 0-1. Birmingham made a second change with Ex Villan Destiny Toussaint coming on for Emma Kelly and Villa brought on Emily Syme for Stine Larsen on the 82nd minute. Ramona Petzelberger was in the thick of the action as Villa’s efforts made some of play become sloppy and Ramona had to cover at the back. Diana Silva was putting pressure on the Birmingham backline but the rest of the team was starting to look tired and deflated as the referee blew the whistle for the final time. Birmingham City had walked away with a 0-1 victory.

The first ever Second City Derby in FAWSL at Villa Park and not a result Villa fan’s would of wanted but you have to say Birmingham City just wanted it more. Carla Ward made fantastic choices and substitutions Georgia Brougham was fantastic at the back. Birmingham deserved their victory and a fantastic goal to settle the tie. As I’ve said many times for 90 minutes we are enemy’s but again I’m happy for most of my Birmingham City Women’s fans who are friends because of what they went through end of last season and so on. But we will take a trip to Solihull in February looking for Vengeance for sure.
