Loughborough Foxes 1-2 Middlesborough

1/11/2020 – Loughborough Uni Stadium – FAWNL NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

gOALS – McGrother – Young, Dodds

Game Day 8 in the Northern Premier League saw Middlesborough visit Loughborough Foxes at Loughborough University Stadium. After the news about a national Lockdown this felt like it would be our last time to see some live football for a while. A massive game between the two teams on show, with some important points to play for. After seeing both teams play Stoke i knew it was going to be a close game.

The game kicked off and it was Loughborough’s dangerous winger who caused the first attack on goal as Mia Walters, impressive as always put a teasing ball into the box from out wide. But with less than 10 minutes on the clock the deadlock was broken as Katie Wilson played in from the centre of the pitch to Anna Young as she struck the ball across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Middlesborough the 0-1 lead on the 8th minute. A perfect start for the visitors as they looked to build on it. Mia Walters was always dangerous for Foxes looking to bring the back into the game but Millie Bell was working hard on the wing to stop her getting anything going. Both teams were trying to get that important second goal in the game with Charlotte Cooper, Anna Young and Tyler Dodds as she glided past the Foxes defence but couldn’t quite find the final touch.

Loughborough Foxes on the 20th minute started to try and pile some pressure onto the Boro defence with a few efforts from Rebecca McGrother which included a ball over the top and a golden chance but was somehow driven high and wide but the flag was already up. It was a fairly even end to end game where each team were testing out defence’s but Loughborough were starting to have the run of the play in the second half of the first half but the Boro defence and Rosie Todd were keeping the clean sheet intact. Rebecca Olley looked to get in behind the Foxes defence but her effort didn’t trouble the keeper. But the final effort of the half fell to the Foxes as Charlotte McGrother got a free header that went just over the bar. The half time whistle went with Middlesborough having a 0-1 lead in a game that could go ethier way.

The second half kicked off and Boro and Tyler Dodds came out the blocks on the front foot as first her cross nearly found it’s way into the top corner and then Tyler’s fantastic work on the wing saw her whip the ball goalwards and it went agonisingly close to the post and also to the on rushing Rebecca Olley who slide in but couldn’t quite get the touch as the score stayed 0-1 still. But as like the first half Loughborough were never to be counted out as it took a last ditch block by Rebekah Bass on the line to stop the Foxes from drawing level. It really was a end to end game with both teams knowing the next goal in this game could be truly important not only in the game but in the season as well. Alot of the Foxes play came through Mia Walters and Charlotte McGrother as they tried to get back on level terms. Anna Young nearly got her second of the game after a lay off by Danielle Brown but her effort looped up over the bar just before the hour mark. Loughborough felt aggrieved when they got on the wrong side of a close offside call between two players going for the same ball.

On the 63rd minute nearly all the good work by Boro was undone by a deflected clearence as the ball bounced off Nicola Russell but thankfully went wide of Rosie Todd’s goal. Tyler Dodds was a threat throughout the game and nearly got in behind but some Fabien Barthez like keeping by Amy Burle say her nick it off her and get it out of danger, very cool and calm by the Foxes keeper. Boro made their first change on the 67th minute as Jasmine McQuade came on to replace Rebecca Olley. And Foxes brought on Frances Miller for Chloe Young. Once again it was Tyler Dodds on the move as she got in behind and unleashed an effort but a wonderful save by Amy Burle kept the Foxes in the game on the 73rd minute. Loughborough made their second change when Grace Lowe came on for Harriet Simes. It was Loughborough that nearly drawed level when once again Rebecca McGrother came close from a Nicola Russell cross.

Followed again by Rebecca McGrother going close from a Laura Steele cross but thankfully Emma Foster was there to clear the ball off the line and somehow this game was still 0-1 going into the last 10 or so minutes. A second change for Boro as Danielle Brown was replaced by Armani Maxwell on the 85th minute. As expected in the last 10 minute Loughborough Foxes were throwing everything at Boro’s defence but it was a cracking effort on the 86th minute by Laura Steele that saw Rosie Todd pull off an even better save to keep Boro in the lead. Loughborough made their final change as Emily Sharpe was replaced by Molly Matthews on the 86th minute.

The pressure final told though in the 87th minute as Rebecca McGrother finally got the goal she deserved all game as some cracking work again by Mia Walters bringing the score to 1-1 with only minutes to play could ethier team find a winner. Middlesborough had done so well to hold onto the early lead but could they bounce back and get the win. About the 92nd minute a quick free kick was taken that saw the ball break too Tyler Dodds who steadied herself and unleashed an absolute delight of a rocket from 25 yards out as it glided and swerved past the diving keeper into the top corner causing a roar and total pandemonium on the pitch as what can only be described as a pile on in the middle of the pitch with all 11 Middlesborough players joining in and they had taken a 1-2 lead in the dying minutes of the game. Boro didn’t have long to hold on before the final whistle went with huge relief to the players in red.

It’s no secret that have a soft spot for Middlesborough and was so happy to see them get the 3 points in what was such an important game they had all worked so hard and was unlucky to concede so late on. But showed real character to not let it get them down and get the second goal to walk away with the 3 points. We had a little chat with Danielle Brown who said she missed the goal doing her warm down but just like the other players as well who said thank you for coming down and supporting them is always appreciated, always the little things that prove real class.

We go into a National Lockdown with The FAWNL more than likely going into at least a month’s break which is a real shame as the season has only really just got going but health and safety is wealth in this world right now. I will certainly miss my football on a Sunday for however long we are away from it. But it was a great way to end as we celebrated Mark’s birthday with Mark and saw some great football that was between both teams. It takes two to tango and Loughborough Foxes came to play and nearly turned the game around. But as we go into this lockdown I hope everyone stays safe and well. Everyone comes out the other side smiling and ready to get going again. In the short season we have had so far, already have so many great memories in the FAWNL Northern Premier League and I’m sure many more are to come as well.

Middlesborough

Rosie showed why she is such a great keeper throughout the game and pulled off a fantastic save late on to keep Boro on level terms.
Roise Todd
Solid and tough at the back, just like Emma was great at reading and tracking back to stop The Foxes from creating too much to trouble Rosie in the goal.
Emily Cassidy
It's fair to say El Capitan of the ship for many reasons. Skill, desire, umpft and will. Heart on sleeve kinda player you love too see playing the game.
Rebekah Bass
Katie is the engine that never seems to stop and maybe doesn't realise how good she is in the middle of the pitch. Always in the thick of the action
Katie Wilson
Powerhouse in the middle of the pitch. You could see the fire and desire in her eyes as she slide in too win the ball back for Boro on many occasions.
Leoine Hutchinson
Seems a bit of a smiling assassin, smile on her face and goals in her boots. Got the opening goal and was unlucky not to add to her total as well.
Anna Young
Armani came on in the second half too help drive Boro forward and worked well with Tyler to get Boro moving into The Foxes box and get towards goal.
Armani Maxwell
Millie was kept honest throughout the game with tracking and keeping Mia Walters quiet and did a fantastic job during the game.
Millie Bell
Everything I love in a CB, reads the game so well and gets across to cover and provide a wall at the back to stop the attackers from getting in behind
Emma Foster
Tyler was a constant threat throughout the game. Her running and skill on the ball. Was unlucky to only score the one but what a goal it was.
Tyler Dodds
Rebecca was not afraid to get stuck in and win the ball back when Loughborough were trying to attack and push Boro onto the back foot during the game.
Rebecca Olley
As always Danielle seem's to do alot of things people won't rave about but you can't help but notice her work effort and what she does on and off the ball.
Danielle Brown
Jasmine came on in the second half and always looked to drag defenders out and used her pace and touch to get Boro on the front foot.
Jasmine McQuade
Such a top bloke, who does so much on and off the pitch. Always a total pleasure to chat to him in person or online. A gem for sure in Boro's Ranks.
