A classic cup tie that went the distance and was decided via penalties in sudden death as Wolves moved onto play book a tie away to Watford in the next round of Women’s FA Cup

The game got underway and Nottingham Forest were first on the attack but Laura O’Neil’s floated cross went straight into the arms of Bec Thomas in the Wolves goal. But Wolves showed that they were up for the tie as Alisha Miller hit an effort that made Aja Aguirre pull off a save in the first 10 minutes of the game. Tammi George was on a different level and was all over the pitch as was winning the ball back, winning free kicks and driving forward. Tammi George also had two efforts making Aja Aguirre save both of them as Wolves started to gain the upper hand in the first 15 minutes.

Wolves were now seemingly in control of the tie as Anna Morphet was getting more into the game and she is always a danger on free kicks as she showed on the 22nd minute but Aja Aguirre was there to pull off another save. Nottingham Forest seemed to struggle to get going and slow down Tammi George in the middle of the pitch.

The 33rd minute brought a big talking point in the game when Jade Cross was clean through on goal when Liv Cook brought her down it was judged to be on the edge of the area. But no Red Card shown to Forest relief as it stopped a goal scoring opportunity, but Daniel McNamara found himself with a telling off from the referee after his disbelief in it only being a yellow card. Wolves were in control of the game as again Jade Cross got in behind the defence but managed to drag her effort wide of the goal. Nottingham Forest would of been glad of the half time whistle as Wolves looked the more likely to score, but the score remained 0-0 at half time.

Wolves got the game underway but Sydnie Naylor  had the first chance of the half as her effort went over the bar on the 48th minute. But it wasn’t too long after on the 49th minute that Rosie Axten gave Nottingham Forest the lead. As Hayley James put a perfectly weighted through ball into to Rosie Axten she didn’t think twice as she slotted the ball home to give Nottingham Forest the 0-1 lead. The worry was that Wolves might let their heads drop especially if Sydnie Naylor’s effort would of gone in but Kelly Darby managed to clear it off the line on the 55th minute.

Wolves after a dip in the game grew back into it on the hour mark with a double chance, with Lowri Walker running through the defence with her skills but she didn’t quite catch her shot enough as Aja Aguirre saves down low. But it wasn’t long before Wolves were level. On the 65th minute as Nyah Edwards brought the ball down and cut it inside to unleash a pearler off an effort into the goal to make it 1-1. It seemed in the melee of the celebration Nyah Edwards picked up an injury and was replaced by Jamila Palmer on the 67th minute.

Aja Aguirre was called into action again as Jamila Palmer hit an effort in the box on the 78th minute. Both teams wee looking to get the winner but both knowing a goal now would seal the tie if it went against them. Sydnie Naylor had an effort blocked and the final effort of the game came with a long range effort by Summer Holmes as the referee blew the whistle and we needed an extra 30 minutes to try and seal the deal in the tie.

The extra time got underway and 3 minutes into it a misplaced pass back by Liv Cook saw Jade Cross use her pace to a took on it before Aja Aguirre can get to the ball as it rolls into the back of the net to give Wolves a 2-1 lead on the 93rd minute. Katie Middleton came on for Nottingham Forest and made a difference as she pressured the Wolves defence. Into Injury time in Extra time a penalty was awarded to Nottingham Forest for handball as Rosie Axten stepped up to take it, it was never in any doubt as she smashed the ball home into the back of the net to make it 2-2 at half time in extra time.

Both teams now knowing that one mistake could decide the tie and Nottingham Forest nearly got the winner when Poppy Schofield got past the Wolves defence and hit a shot at goal but the ball just went wide of the target as it rolled past the post but only just on the 113th minute. Both teams were feeling the pace and the weather as well as the occasion as the final 15 minutes were completed with both teams at a deadlock with the score at 2-2 as we enter into the penalty shootout to decide who would take on Watford away in the next round of the cup on the 11th of April.
