Leafield Athletic 0-2 Leek Town

It was time for our third game in 7 days, with Leek Town visiting Highgate United for this all weather game. Muggy, close, raining and blazing Sun all on the menu during the game. After a fun morning it was time for the game to get underway. The warms up were done and the teams lined up for the start of the game.

The first half showed positive signs with some of the build up play and finding ourselves in behind the defence but in all honesty the finishing on the day which is a recurring theme throughout the game cost us. We won’t mention the handball.

Not to say that also Leek had chances that of course Colette Bell kept us honest at the back. But a much better performance than in midweek saw us frustrated to go in at half time without troubling the scorers. But you felt at 0-0 it was coming with the positions we found ourselves in.

But some rushed finishing and just not connecting well enough saw us not really trouble the Leek Town goalkeeper to make a true save. The half time whistle went at 0-0 with us well and truly in the game.

The second half would see a big 45 minutes with the score at deadlock in the first. Leafield again came out and played well until it came to the finish. Chances at 0-0 came and went, now on another day, if we take our chances it could of ended a different way. On one point some of the play building up to it was good but the 0 on our scoresheet should really have been more. This is a mix of Leek defending well, us being sloppy and being wasteful in front of goal.

In the midst of some good pressure Leek showed they were still dangerous with Colette Bell as per usual pulling off a fantastic save, but the opening goal came from the ball hitting the woodwork again for Leek and being finished by Alise Gindra on the 66th minute to give Leek a 0-1 lead.

Leafield tried to get back into the game and again had a fair amount of the ball and build up just with no real finish in sight to trouble the Leek keeper. It was alot of could of been and nearly but not quite. But as with all games when you chase the game late on in the 97th minute Leek Town was awarded a penalty with Chantelle Gallagher stepped up and gave Leek the 3 points with a 0-2 lead.

If you take the 7 days into account we started the week with an incredible victory against Boldmere in a game we had to soak up pressure in the heat and pulled off a cracking victory. Sutton Coldfield in reality just wasn’t good enough over the 90 minutes and Sutton wanted it more. Leek Town game was a game I truly don’t think we played badly and don’t understand how we didn’t find ourselves on the scoresheet. One thing that truly goes deeper than football and results is what an incredible bunch of people and players that are involved in Leafield Athletic and something I truly love being apart of. Our next fixture is away to Notts County in the League on Sunday 17th September with a 2pm kick off.

As well as our first team in action it was time for our Leafield Athletic Lynx’s to play their first game against Coton Green Ladies. The game ended 2-5 unfortunately but the team will bounce back without doubt in the next game. Both our goals came through Felicity Barnes, but it wasn’t too be for the Lynx’s. They continue the season with a home game at Dickens Heath on Sunday 17th September against A F C Chelmsley Colts.

Photos from the Lynx’s game from the fantastic Dicky. Check him out and his fantastic work as always.
